REPAIR FENDER AT MOORING G

The Mooring G pier is home to the well-known aircraft carrier “Kitty Hawk.” Prior to the decommissioning of the Kitty Hawk, the Navy discovered that the fendering on the east side of the southern mooring island had deteriorated to the point where it needed to be repaired. The main feature of the new fendering system consists of 12 beams which are attached to the side of the mooring. First, Nova installed a work platform on the existing camel, which became an efficient work area for removing the existing piles and installing the new structural steel system. One challenge that arose was the de-rating of the Mooring G pier due to two damaged piles. The vehicle weight limits for the Mooring were reduced, resulting in Nova having to modify its approach to the removal and installation of the fender system. The Navy was very proactive in working with Nova to find a solution for this development and an acceptable work plan was quickly developed, which involved installing crane mats across the de-rated sections. Other challenges included the necessity of working at low tide, and the difficulty of working around the existing chains.
