Electrical Power Capacity Upgrades (EPCU), Los Alamos National Laboratory, NM

This design-build project is a Joint Venture with Nova’s sister company, Probst Electric. The goals and objectives of the project are to provide the Los Alamos National Laboratory a 115kV transmission system with a minimum of 200 MVA import capacity with N-1 contingency reliability, to provide the internal 115kV transmission system with the capacity and reliability to support the imported minimum 200 MVA capacity, and to provide the 13.8kV distribution system with the capacity and resiliency to deliver the minimum 200 MVA to Los Alamos National Laboratory facilities and customer loads. The work includes a 3-mile underground electrical utility distribution ductbank with red concrete and flowable fill concrete, 6-inch PVC conduit and 150,000 linear feet of 1,000 kcmil cable and grounding wire, as well as installation of the towers/poles and cable for 4-mile CN Line 115kV overhead transmission line and 5-mile 13.8kV overhead distribution, with some underground distribution connection to new and existing facilities. The project also includes three 15kV Switchgear additions at Intertie and SCC locations and three substation expansion (ETA, WTA, TA03), including 56MVA transformer, reactor, capacitor banks, and bus bays. Offsite of the campus the work includes installation of the towers and cable for the 13- mile SN Line feeder 115kV overhead transmission between PNM Norton Substation and the STA Switchyard, crossing the Rio Grande River Gorge.
