MISSION SUPPORT SERVICES FOR SSBN/SSGN; Naval Base Kitsap, Bangor, WA

This project provided facilities to support the homeporting of two additional submarines at Naval Base Kitsap in Bangor, Washington. The facilities included the addition of a Delta Pier South 3,200-amp shore power upgrade to permit submarine nesting, and a new emergency generator building providing power to the waterfront.

The new generator building was constructed to house the four new 900 RPM 2.17 MW emergency diesel generators and parallel switchgear, with sustained operation fueled by 40,000 gallons of on-site adjacent UST storage capacity consisting of four fuel tanks.

The waterfront work included installation of eleven piles averaging 180 feet in length each, design of a unique captivating camel with the ability to moor a 450-foot hulled, 30-million-pound ballistic missile submarine that provides the flexibility for a submarine to move with the water to accommodate the extreme tide fluctuations of more than 20 feet, and design, fabrication, and installation of a hydraulic power cable boom to connect submarines to shore power.  New piles were also driven to support captivated camels.  Two new hydraulic power booms were designed to accommodate 20-foot fluctuations in tides. They were installed at the existing Marginal Wharf South power mounds to enable nesting of additional submarines with easier connectivity to shore power.  The boom was built in Nova’s fabrication shop in Napa, California.
